A newsroom tip can lead to reporting, but it does not start an official proceeding. If you want an institution or public authority to act, use an official complaint route as well. In an immediate danger, move to safety and contact emergency assistance or the local police instead of waiting for an online response.

The National Anti-Ragging complaint portal asks for details about the victim, institution and incident. Its current form includes the victim's name and contact details, the college and a description of the ragging. The portal instructs complainants who have evidence to email it to helpline@antiragging.in using the same email address and to mention the attachments in the complaint details.

The National Anti-Ragging Helpline is available at 1800-180-5522, and its published email address is helpline@antiragging.in. Official guidance says anybody can report ragging; the person reporting does not have to be the victim. Guidance also says an anonymous complaint is possible, while warning that missing details can make action difficult. Ask the helpline how to minimise identification if disclosure could create a safety risk.

You can also notify the college principal or dean, the institution's anti-ragging nodal officer, hostel warden, Anti-Ragging Committee or another trusted authority. Use a written channel where possible. A verbal conversation may help urgently, but an email or acknowledged letter creates a date, exact wording and follow-up trail.

Prepare a compact factual account: what happened, when, where, who was present, what you personally saw, what somebody else told you and whether the conduct is continuing. Include only relevant evidence. Preserve originals separately and send copies. Do not circulate intimate material or evidence whose possession may itself create danger; seek specialised official or legal guidance.

Save the complaint number, submitted text, email headers and every response. The national portal provides complaint-status tracking. If the matter is marked resolved but the complainant is not satisfied, record why, respond through the official channel and document any retaliation, pressure to withdraw or academic or hostel disadvantage as new information.
